In early 2026, Kenya's food safety headlines told a familiar and deeply troubling story. Four popular peanut butter brands were pulled from supermarket shelves after laboratory tests detected aflatoxin levels far above the legally permitted 15 parts per billion. One sample clocked in at 934 ppb — more than 62 times the allowed limit. Consumers panicked. Regulators scrambled. Products were banned.

The Staggering Cost of Invisibility
Kenya's agricultural sector is the backbone of the national economy, directly or indirectly supporting over 40% of total employment and contributing approximately 26% of GDP. Yet the system haemorrages value at every stage of the value chain.
According to a 2025 study by the World Resources Institute Africa, Kenya loses approximately KES 72 billion (US$578 million) in food waste and post-harvest losses every year — with between 30% and 40% of all food produced never reaching a consumer. In Kenya's breadbasket counties of Trans-Nzoia, Uasin-Gishu, and Nakuru, up to 30% of harvested crops rot before they can be sold or consumed.

This gap between export and domestic performance is not accidental. It is the direct result of traceability. When European and Middle Eastern buyers require documented provenance, temperature logs, and certification, producers rise to meet the standard. When no one is watching, standards collapse.
A Fragmented System That Protects No One
Kenya's food safety architecture is not designed for the 21st century. Regulation is spread across the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Agriculture, and multiple county-level bodies. A single product — say, a jar of peanut butter — falls under the overlapping mandates of at least three separate agencies, none of which has complete visibility over that product's journey.
This fragmentation creates what food safety advocates call a "regulatory vacuum." Without a central body empowered to track safety from farm to fork, the system can only react — never prevent. The National Food Safety Policy, meant to modernize this architecture, has languished in draft form since 2021.
The consequences are measured in lives. The World Health Organization estimates that foodborne illnesses claim more than 2.2 million lives annually in developing countries. In Kenya, foodborne disease contributes to chronic child stunting, which affects 16% of children — a figure linked directly to repeated diarrheal episodes caused by contaminated food.
Economically, the damage compounds. Kenyan farmers lose access to lucrative European and Middle Eastern markets every year precisely because they cannot demonstrate robust traceability. The difference between a Kenyan avocado that earns a premium on a shelf in Amsterdam and one that rots in Nakuru often comes down to a single question: can you prove where it came from and how it was handled?
